Inspiration

To make sense of my adoration for Pete Burns you guys have to realise that there was a really strange period in British media where all of our musicians, tv presenters and fashion stars were completely mundane. There really was a drought of interesting people in the public eye and I think there were cases around this time in which there were androgynous people on tv like Julian Clarey, who made LGBT themed jokes on primetime which resulted in him being kinda blacklisted by TV. So there was a void. There was no trans representation aside from a dating show where they tricked men into finding out the woman was trans. There was Manson in music who I appreciated, but I felt wasn’t particularly beautiful or the type of music I was into. Everything that looked intriguing to me was in throw back tv. But then bam, celebrity Big Brother took place and it introduced a new character to my age group. Pete Burns.

It’s been a bit of an investigation into finding out about Pete Burns career, because like many artists who from the outside were viewed as queer, the content is not archived properly. So there’s not a huge amount of information. But as the universe has consistently caused in my life, about a year after he was in Big Brother I visited a club in London called Circus and low and behold, Pete Burns was there. That really led to a love affair with his tenacity to be himself.

I literally lived for some time in reference to Pete Burns, many of my ensembles I based were from his tour looks or his recreations. I got the opportunity to model in some of his stuff during a shoot with Gozra which you can find more information about in my Blue look. I just aspire to people who are unabashedly themselves and in having that example, I found me.

One lesson that I’ve taken with me, which I think has been both a blessing and a curse, is that I will not leave anything to chance within my career. I operate with intense strategy because I will not have my image, my brand or my potential castrated by uninformed prejudice in the entertainment world.
