A Stay at Hotel Kung Carl, Stockholm

There are hotels that simply give you somewhere to sleep, and then there are hotels that become part of the destination itself. From the moment I arrived at Hotel Kung Carl in the heart of Stockholm, I had a feeling this would be one of those places. Situated just moments from Stureplan, the hotel occupies three beautiful historic buildings that have been seamlessly connected beneath an elegant glass-covered courtyard, creating a space that feels both grand and intimate. Originally established in 1866 and now recognised as Stockholm's oldest family-owned hotel, Hotel Kung Carl has spent more than a century blending historic Art Nouveau character with contemporary Scandinavian comfort.

Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the atmosphere. Whether entering through the stylish bistro or the main reception, the welcome was incredibly warm. The staff were genuinely charming throughout my stay, taking the time to chat, complimenting my fragrance and making every interaction feel personal rather than transactional. It was exactly the sort of hospitality that makes you feel like a returning guest rather than someone checking in for the first time.

One of my favourite details came almost immediately after reception. Guests have the choice between a beautifully preserved vintage lift, complete with a manually operated gate, or a modern elevator. I couldn't resist trying the older one—it felt like stepping back in time and perfectly reflected the hotel's respect for its history.

My room on the fifth floor completely exceeded expectations. Beautifully designed with thoughtful touches throughout, it featured a record player, a charming teddy bear waiting on the bed, and a well-stocked minibar filled with premium snacks and drinks available to purchase. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, making it incredibly easy to relax after a day exploring Stockholm. The highlight, however, was undoubtedly the pair of balconies. Positioned on the corner of the building, I was treated to panoramic views stretching across the rooftops of Stockholm, with glimpses towards the waterfront in the distance. It was one of those views that encouraged you to pause for a while and simply take it all in.

Breakfast deserves a paragraph of its own because it was genuinely one of the best hotel breakfasts I've experienced. Included with every stay, the Scandinavian buffet felt more like an artisan food market than a standard hotel breakfast. There were beautifully presented fresh fruits, locally sourced cheeses and cured meats, freshly prepared eggs, pastries, breads, cereals, yoghurts and an impressive selection of seasonal produce. I particularly loved the fresh apple and ginger juice, alongside excellent coffee that set me up perfectly for the day ahead. Every element felt carefully selected to showcase high-quality Swedish ingredients rather than simply offering quantity.

Although the hotel doesn't focus on spa facilities, it offers everything needed for an elegant city break. Room service is available through a convenient QR code ordering system or by contacting reception directly, while the restaurant and breakfast service ensure you're well looked after throughout your stay. Combined with its unbeatable central location, distinctive character and genuinely exceptional service, Hotel Kung Carl manages to feel luxurious without ever becoming pretentious.

Stockholm has no shortage of beautiful hotels, but Hotel Kung Carl offers something increasingly rare: personality. It celebrates its history without feeling dated, embraces modern comforts without losing its soul, and delivers the kind of heartfelt hospitality that stays with you long after you've checked out. It's the sort of place I would happily return to, not just because of its location, but because it made me feel completely at home.
