My Favourite Yo Sushi Vegan Options

Hey everyone!

One of my first ever videos I published to Youtube was in Yo Sushi, and those videos are definitely some of my favourite ever memories. I’ve always loved stopping at Victoria Station on route to an event or a meeting and grabbing lunch there for the sheer nostalgia of the food. I have gone on so many bad dates in Yo Sushi… I know. Nowadays it’s quite different and when I want sushi me + the Baron get to have Moshi Moshi to ourselves with the canines, but even still. Yo Sushi is a soft spot.

I think the best thing for me about Yo is that there is a straightforward payment system. Everything is identified by its plate colour and it gives you a clear indication of how much you are spending. When you go into the restaurant you can work out from the get-go how much you want to spend and what you can grab. My options used to be quite limited because when they did the initial vegetarian options they all had Tamago, or otherwise known as sweet omelette in the rolls. You could grab the maki but the ISO rolls or the inari weren’t suitable. So my go-to used to be the refillable Miso with no seaweed, I don’t like the texture despite the layered effect it gives. It’s also cheap and you can order as much as you like so when we were broke students this is literally the one that got me by haha. I also used to love the edamame as a snack but there was not as much of a range as there is today.

In the last couple of years, they’ve sort of deconstructed their plates and made a lot of them vegan, as well as introduced western foods and larger hot bowls. There are loads of cute katsu options with pumpkin korokke, my favourite ever was the pumpkin korokke which is like a sweet potato in breadcrumbs, with a sticky marinade. You can get a full bowl with rice now. I also loved the vege yakisoba, a noodle dish that comes with an assortment of sweet, crunchy and fresh vegetables. Today, however, I definitely go for the range of salads. I miss the crunchy tofu they used to do because it was a light snack, but they offer tenderstem broccoli with a cute sauce and a seaweed and carrot side which is amazing. I also wanted to try doing a desert because I’m really not a sweet tooth and I forget about including them here, so here’s an avocado-based mouse that’s really yummy.

The one thing I dislike about Yo is that it’s a cheaper option, it’s not a luxury experience it’s something you go to and you hang out in and you leave without spending too much. But the tables are assorted with sunken containers into them and it’s not unhygienic for me and my OCD. The napkins are often in these boxes that are part of the table with the sauces and the taps next to them and I’m concerned about how dirty they can get, I wish they’d remove those buzzers that never work that get the waiters attention and remove those sunken things and made everything feel fresh. I don’t like the pickled ginger and the soy sauce that’s sharable and open or the wasabi, so I’m just a stickler for things like that. I do think there are also some other issues with set up of the restaurant because there have been two occasions, one where I was with my friend Sphirex in Oxford Circus and we were sitting in our lunch break getting a snack, and the waiter literally fell over and tipped the tray of glasses into the table and it smashed all over our food and they failed to amend it. I also sat in the Brighton Yo with the Baron after going to Penguin Pride book event and the pipe above our table was dripping next to us, so there are a lot of issues but at the end of the day, it maintains that sense of memory for me and I still like to visit.

So on a Monday they do an event called Blue Monday, which offers the more expensive plates to the blue options. They also do Green Wednesdays which focuses on vegetarian food and vegan options, so there are some great opportunities if you wanted to try it and not spend too much. The plate system is very straight forward, I never buy anything more than a purple plate on the occasion because the vegetarian options are so much cheaper than the fish, so £1.90 for green plates, £2.20 for Miso. 2.50 for Orange. 3.40 for Purple and so on all the way up to a slice of a fish!

Let me know what your favs are from Yo Sushi below.
